Nest Claim, Custer County, Idaho. Mined in 2005, this is a natural
calcite, fresh from the pocket. A few special calcites were so nice upon being
collected that they were not cleaned beyond a simple, light water washing. This
specimen has calcite, heulandite-Ca, mordenite, and heulandite-Na. One cm
crystals of pink heulandite-Ca wrap around the base of this fine rich yellow-
gold colored calcite crystal attractively and offers nice color contrasts. One
of only a few calcites mined in 2005, the Rat's Nest mine's finest year yet for
calcite production. Heulandite-Na lines the pocket beneath the mordenite as a

Rat's Claim, Custer County, Idaho. The Rat's Nest claim is the United
States premier locality for Heulandite-Ca and Mordenite.
The Heulandite-Ca has a soft, almost two-toned color, grading from a clearish -
white to a wonderful pinkish color in sharp, beautiful crystals which are
associated with minor amounts of soft, almost yellowish, colored crystals of
Calcite. Crystals of Heulandite-Ca range up to an impressive 5cm long and are
quite lustrous, catching and flashing in the light. This specimen has a shape
which is very reminiscent of specimen # RNa6. Measures 28.8 x 19 x 16.5cm.

patch of translucent butterscotch-colored Calcite impressively accents the

The Heulandite-Ca has a soft, almost two-toned color, grading from a clearish -

Crystals of Heulandite-Ca reach 4 centimeters in size and are quite lustrous,
catching and flashing in the light. This specimen is one of 3 such
double-pocket, double-sided geodes. This specimen displays a fluid roundish

has a main pocket and another underlying, partially opened pocket beneath it
which is seen through small openings within the crystals lining the main pocket.

Claim, Custer County, Idaho. Heulandite-Ca with minor accessory
Mordenite in two pockets, one on each side of the specimen. The
Heulandite-Ca has a soft, almost two-toned color, grading from a clearish -
white to a wonderful pinkish color in sharp, beautiful crystals. Crystals of
Heulandite-Ca go up almost 4cm and are quite lustrous, catching and flashing in
the light. This specimen is one of 3 such double-pocket, double-sided specimens
and is the second largest geode-like pocket recovered from the Rat's Nest claim.
The front pocket here is very attractive, while the back pocket, a large pocket,
is much less attractive due to a coating of calcite while obscures some
Heulandite-Ca crystals. This specimen displays a long shape very reminiscent of

Mordenite, Rat's Nest Claim,
Custer County, Idaho
The Rat's Nest Claim has produced what is widely
considered North America's finest heulandite-Ca. Besides the world class
heulandite-Ca, the locality has produced what are likely the finest North
American mordenite specimens. Delicate specimens of mordenite have been
successfully shipped to destinations world wide; because of their delicate
nature, no guarantee can be made that they will successfully survive the rigors
of the postal system, although every effort will be made to insure their safe
transit.
