The Gem Queen Pegmatite,
Jefferson County, Montana
For it's small size, the Gem Queen has produced a
large number of exceptionally fine specimens; most notably fine groups of
titanite. Shortly after the locality was discovered, small scale mining
began. Numerous difficulties with illegal collecting caused the closure of
the project. Over the years mining claims have been located on the
locality only to be abandoned largely due to difficulties with illegal
collecting activity. Several years ago, I heavily worked the locality; I
drove through the pegmatite at depth and reached the southern edge. Some
minor amounts of in situ pegmatite are still present, mostly along the western
edge; there is limited potential for future discoveries at the locality.
