The Green Monster Mine, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska

The Green Monster mine, or Green Monster Mountain if you prefer, on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska ranks among the worlds top epidote localities. While I frequently collect at remote localities in harsh conditions, I continue to be amazed by the lengths that some will go through to obtain mineral specimens, the Green Monster is one of those localities. Consider that each of these pieces was collected by hand with little to no mechanical equipment and was then packed down the mountain side and flown out of the Alaska wilderness on a helicopter. I recently worked out a little trade with my friend and one of the mine owners Doug Toland, these are the pieces I received. The pieces that Doug selected for me are those that he considered to be unusual or interesting as compared to the bulk of pieces from the mine. 01299 Quartz with epidote, Green Monster Mine, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. Thick bundle of dark green, nearly black, epidote with a few attached crystals of quartz. The epidote has mirror like luster has a bit more character than the flattened sprays which seem to be the more common occurrence of this habit. No noticeable damage. 01285 Epidote, Green Monster Mine, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. Divergent spray of dark green epidote with lighter grass green terminations. Pieces such as this have only been found at the locality in the last few years indicating that their occurrence is quite limited and the likelihood of great quantities of similar material is really low. A few small quartz crystals are present on the surface of the epidote. Some very minor damage is present along the edges but the piece is quite good for the habit.
